Rock Solid

An occasional series of talks on basic aspects of geology

Designed to give members ‘hooks’ upon which to hang the more specialised aspects that are the subject of talks from outside speakers.

Millions of Years – get your head around the enormity of geological time. How big is a million? How long is a million years? The Earth is 4,567 millions years old (or thereabouts) – plenty of time for continents to waltz around the globe, as well as for the evolution of sentient life.

Minerals: Feldspar – the most common mineral in the Earth’s crust. Feldspar is found in all types of rock, in a variety of ‘flavours’ and even as gems such as sunstone and moonstone.
